Commercial Door Installation

Understanding how commercial doors are installed is something that many people struggle with on a daily basis. It is extremely important to have a solid understanding of the process before attempting to perform the task. Some aspects that should be taken into account are:

What is the size of the door opening?

A standard commercial door is 3 feet wide and either 7 feet tall or 6 feet 8 inches tall. The opening should include room for the frame as well. At Indiana Wholesale Supply, we keep an inventory of 3-foot wide steel and wood doors that are 7 feet tall, as well as a number of doors that are 6 feet 8 inches. If you need doors or frames in these sizes, we may be able to perform rush orders to add visions and hardware and deliver to you within a matter of days.

We are also able to provide doors and frames in other, non-standard sizes. One common request is a 4-foot wide door for medical buildings that need to fit a gurney through the opening. We can construct 6-foot wide frames for double doors, including mullions or astragals, and fabricate doors and metal frames to meet a wide range of custom requests. Give us a call to see if we can meet your needs.

Is the door frame being fastened to wood, existing masonry, or is the wall being constructed around the frame?

Our hollow metal frames can be secured to various openings, but the hardware required to do so depends on the material surrounding the opening. Indiana Wholesale Supply can provide the hardware needed to fasten a frame to each material.

We will punch and dimple any size of metal frame and supply expansion anchors for going into existing masonry. We have wood lags and stud clip anchors for securing the frame to wood. We also provide wire masonry anchors for new block construction around the frame.

As with all details of commercial door installation, our team can inform, supply, and assist you on securing your door frame so that your project goes as smoothly as possible.

In what direction should the door open?

It is important to denote where the hinges should be on a commercial door before ordering or installing the frame or door. For a single door, it will either open on the left or right-hand side, with the door swinging inward or outward. Our frames and doors are fabricated and customized with these details in mind, and there can be security or logistical consequences if this is not configured correctly.

The door’s hardware parts and installations can also be dependent on how the door is supposed to open, so getting this wrong can end up in wasted time, money, and headaches.

Does the door need so be weather sealed and access controlled?

While it's easy to only consider the door and frame as part of the installation, there are a number of smaller hardware accessories needed to create a professional and secure commercial door. If you have a lever handle lockset, there are various options for which side requires a key for entry, or in the case of a passage function lever set neither one! If the door needs to close automatically, an arm closer is generally needed. A threshold or sweep is needed to seal the opening at the bottom of the door. Silencers are often placed where the door and frame meet to keep the door from slamming shut. There are many details to consider about the style, function, and experience that the door and frame creates, and much of the overall feel of the opening is determined by the hardware accessories integrated into the door and frame. Our experienced team will ask the right questions to provide you with the exact, professional experience you want in your project.
